The Pioneers
WRA was looking to decorate the third floor of their newly renovated Seymour Hall. Reserve knows at this point that we are essentially just creative people for hire, and the end medium is not specific. We’ve laid out books, produced songs, made videos, written essays and in this case, designed and produced an entire mixed media art series that was printed and framed and hung at WRA.
We wanted to come up with something that would age well, that honoured the fact that our designated wall space was adjacent to the history wing and of course, something the kids would find compelling.
This project was produced over a series of four weeks (while we were producing seven original videos simultaneously). The uniforms were posed in the exact positions as the reference paintings and photographs and the images were delivered to Reserve framed and ready to go.
The plaque next to the project reads:
How would you paint a portrait of a Pioneer? In this series, you'll see heroes and history makers, masterpieces and record-breakers, celebrity powerhouses and some of the most iconic images in our collective memory. They wear Reserve Green, our symbol and marker of a Pioneer, because they paved the roads that we all follow. These icons reflect the qualities and the potential we see in all of you, and what you will aspire to achieve in this world.
